The typology of utilitarian texts by B.Sandig

Typological matrix, suggested by Barbara Sandig is one of the most developed foreign typologies of texts, that belong to the sphere of consumption (сфера потребления). The matrix is based on 20 parameters that include the oppositions of certain characteristics allowing to differentiate the types of texts. These parameters cover both linguistic and extra-linguistic characteristics of texts, e.g.: material manifestation of a text, spontaneity, the number of communication participants (monologue/dialogue), the type of contact, characteristic features of the beginning, middle, and the end of the text, preliminary fixation of the theme, frequency of personal pronouns, imperative and temporal verbal forms, utilization of means of language economy and language redundancy, non-lingual means, relations between communication partners.

Typological characteristics of a certain class of texts consist in different combinability of features presented in the table. B.Sandig analyzes 18 classes of texts that have different set of features to get them the status of different “types of texts”. Here belong: interview, private letter, telephone conversation, texts of the law, doctor’s prescription, culinary recipe, weather forecast, obituary, lecture, lecture notes, advertisement, ‘jobs’ advertisement, radionews, newspaper report (article), telegram, instruction manual, discussion, free conversation.

The first three features (material manifestation of a text, the mode of utterance production – spontaneity, the number of communication participants (monologue/dialogue), are the most important in B.Sandig’s typology.
